Summer Lead Instructor

June - July 2022 • Diamond Bar, CA

What I liked

Camp was very organized. There is a structure to the teams, routine, and curriculum. The expectations for instructor were clear and reasonable. Coworkers are very nice and friendly.

What I wish was different

The schedule for some of the staff is very unstable. You are not guaranteed work every day. I also had issues with HQ in the beginning, and communication was not the best. The pay and benefit wasn't great either.

Advice

This is a great opportunity for those who want hands-on experience with classroom settings and working with children of different ages. However, because of the scheduling system, have a back up summer plan if money is the main issue for you.

What I liked

I enjoyed working with others who were passionate about education. My coworkers and I worked hard to make our summer camp enjoyable for the campers.

What I wish was different

It would have been a more enjoyable experience if the location in which I worked was disability friendly.

Advice

I advise you to drink lots of water and wear sunscreen. Summer camp means being outdoors.

Team Leader

June - August 2022 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Interacting with the kids, watching the children create soccer robots, catapults, water blasters, and dinosaurs.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a more definite position. I was scheduled to only work one week out of the entire summer, but I was requested at the West Loop location for a week and was able to work more than the one week I was scheduled.

Advice

Be patient, working with children can be difficult, especially when some of the children were not neurotypical.

Team Leader

June - July 2022 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I liked being able to bond with the campers and co-workers. Teaching innovation to the campers was a new experience to me and I enjoyed it.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more training or experience on what to say to kids in certain situations. Child development is important and I worried what I say might impact them.

Advice

I would read through the training papers they gave out and highlight the dialogue on what to say in certain situations.

Lead Instructor

June - July 2022 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

This experience was greatly enhanced by my teammates and bosses. The people that work here are all really friendly and welcoming. The management would be absolutely lovely and offer me time to relax if I had any health complications. I was motivated to come to work because of how kind and understanding the staff was, knowing that I would have a solid support system if something went wrong.

What I wish was different

After waking up later for college, I was not used to waking up so early for the commute. While I'm glad I still accepted my location, I also struggled with the early morning 25-minute commute. Definitely working at the camp that was closer by would have saved me a lot of trouble and left me with tons more energy.

Advice

Come with a natural love for working with children, without a doubt! If you don't have the initial desire for dealing with children, this job can become rather tough at times, and you'll feel irritated nearly right away.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2021 • Altadena, CA

What I liked

It didn't feel like a job to me! Most days, the hours went by so quickly because I was having so much fun, and I just felt like being at Galileo allowed me to really break out of my shell and become more confident as a person.

What I wish was different

Our camp was a little understaffed, so it was a little hectic in the beginning, but we were all flexible and able to make it work out.

Advice

In the beginning, I was scared that I wouldn't be 'fun' or 'outgoing' enough to be working at a summer camp, but I learned there isn't really one 'mold' to what makes a good camp counselor. So just be you and you will do fine!

Assistant Instructor (Camp Counselor)

June - August 2019 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I liked the environment of camp because it was very different from what goes on during the school year. It was a really fun experience and helped develop my leadership abilities. It also helps a lot with communication abilities.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to teach in more of the engineering-related classes because that was what I am passionate about. It is sometimes difficult to move between classes, and they do their best to match you up with the classes you want.

Advice

I commonly highlight this experience because it shows how I can be a strong leader, inspire the people I work with, and work well in a team setting.

Team Leader

May - August 2018 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

The work is engaging and rewarding. Staff tends to be fairly similar in age so it’s easy to make connections with your coworkers.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been training on how to spot red flag behavior in children.

Advice

This job is very physically demanding and often requires coming in and starting the day at 7. Be prepared to be on your feet and at full energy from about 7 AM to 5 PM.

Rotational Summer Intern

June - July 2019 • Woodland Hills, CA

What I liked

This experience allowed me to form good connections with others in the same field and gain insight into the daily schedule of an educator. I had some amazing coworkers and we all became friends before the first day on the job! The staff atmosphere was open, inclusive, and fun. We joked around and were super goofy all the time, which really helped the kids have fun as well. My boss always wore silly hats which would get the kids excited for the day and the other staff would just feed off of their positive energy. There was really never a boring moment.

What I wish was different

Morning shifts handled mostly physical labor rather than interacting with children which was the primary reason for me applying to this position. I never had an afternoon shift, and thus was never able to interact with the children on a deeper level and form connections with them. A summer intern is not a position for people who want to interact with children all the time. It would be better for you to apply as a Lead Instructor or a Team Leader.

Advice

If you are looking for a job to get paid, this isn't the one for you. It's a lot of work; but in the end, it's worth it. As a summer intern, you do a lot of the prep work for activities and classroom lessons, which can sometimes feel a bit anticlimactic since you are always behind the scenes, but you know that what you do is important and you see the smiles on the kids' faces. The work environment is very friendly and nice. I've made friends with all the staff, even my boss. The Galileo staff environment stresses the importance of collaboration and building friendships, and that's exactly what happens.
